Neighborhood Revitalization
Community Development is involved in numerous varied activities throughout the community. The following activities are also undertaken:
- Assistance to local non-profit organizations for housing
- Assistance to organized community groups
- Redevelopment area projects
- Transitional housing
- Infrastructure
- Weed & Seed Neighborhood Restoration
Community Development celebrated National Community Development Week in April 2005 with the completion of the Merritt on Floyd housing development.
This project began in 1993 with the acquisition of 52 apartments and 30 single family units. The project was funded by a $3.2 million dollar loan from HUD and received two housing awards, 1999 Housing award from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency and the John J. Gunther’s Blue Ribbon Practices in Community Development Award in 1997. The area now consists of 6 condos and 48 single family homes all purchased by first time homeowners.
